How to play

Number the players 1-5. Players 1 and 4 form one team and 2 and 3 the other; player 5 joins one side for holes 1-3, the other for 4-6, and keeps swapping every three holes. Play best ball (net) match play each hole. Whichever side has the lower nine-hole score decides where the fifth player's points land for that nine, or simply score the fifth player's own best-ball contributions on the card.

Scoring

1 point per hole won by the team's best ball; the floater collects the points of whichever team they were on for that hole. Settle at 18 on point differences at $1 a point.

Variations

  • Swap teams at the turn instead of every three holes
  • Float the highest handicap
  • Use scramble instead of best ball

Tips

  • Mark the rotation on the card before the first tee
  • The floater needs to be someone who keeps score well
  • Keeps a fivesome moving because it is still best ball

Nobody is left out and the floater becomes the most popular player in the group.
