Umbrella

Two teams of two, own ball. Five points are available each hole: low individual ball, low team total, green in regulation by partner 1, green in regulation by partner 2, and a birdie by either partner. Each point is worth the number of the hole being played (1 point each on hole 1, 18 each on hole 18, so 90 points are in play on 18). Appoint a reliable scorekeeper.

If one team wins all five categories while the other scores zero it is an umbrella and the hole's points double (sweeping hole 5's 25 points = 50). A tie in any category kills the umbrella. Settle per point or by pot. Some groups instead play a 6-point version (low ball 2, low total 2, closest in regulation 1, birdie 1, sweep doubles to 12), which is better known as Six-Point Scotch.

• Add longest drive, closest to pin on par 3s or sandies as extra categories
• Net play where handicap strokes can create net birdies and net GIRs (define GIR with strokes first)
• Fixed point value per category instead of hole number

• The back nine is worth far more; do not be down big at the turn
• Both partners hitting greens is the easiest sweep
• Agree the GIR definition with handicaps before starting
