How to play
Agree a menu of mistakes and their point values before the round. Play your own ball and record a point total for every mishap on each hole. At the end the player with the fewest points wins the pot or is paid per point by the others. Can also be played 2v2.
Scoring
Common values: water 1, out of bounds 1, into a bunker 1, failing to escape a bunker on the first try 1, bunker to bunker 2, three-putt 1, four-putt 3 (some groups play 4), whiff/air shot 4. Optional: no penalty points on a hole where you make par.
Variations
- Add missed fairway, missed green on a par 3, missed 3-footer, drive not clearing the forward tees, hitting a tree
- Team version summing partners' points
- Pot vs per-point settlement
Tips
- Lay up short of water and out of bunkers; the game punishes heroics
- Lag putts to avoid the three-putt point
- Agree definitions (what counts as a bunker) first
A bad round for score can still win if you avoid disasters.
