How to play

Convert each player's course handicap into do-overs, typically three-quarters or two-thirds of it (a 15 gets 10-11 mulligans). Play gross score, replaying any shot you like: drives, approaches, putts. The first tee shot cannot be replayed and no shot can be replayed twice. Lowest total wins.

Scoring

Gross 18-hole score with mulligans used; no further handicap adjustment. Prize or pot to the low total.

Variations

  • Full handicap as mulligans for high-handicap fields
  • Limit mulligans to tee shots only
  • Pace of play is slower, so mind the groups behind
  • Full handicap in mulligans for beginners
  • Replay putts only
  • Team version: pooled mulligans

Tips

  • Save several mulligans for the last few holes
  • Do not waste one on a 3-footer early
  • Agree replay-from-same-spot rules
  • Save a few for the closing holes
  • Rounds run long; watch pace of play

Every golfer's fantasy: the bad shot never happened.
