How to play

When a player is off the green, they may announce a Murphy, betting they will get up and down. If they hole the next putt they collect the agreed amount from every other player; if not they pay each of them. Groups either make every call live automatically or let opponents accept or decline. Flaps is the airborne version: call flap while the chip is in the air and an opponent may double before the first bounce.

Scoring

Fixed amount per Murphy (e.g. $1-$2 per player); doubled Flaps pay twice.

Variations

  • Optional acceptance vs automatic
  • Distance minimums for the chip
  • House rules vary; confirm the details before the round
  • Must be called vs automatic
  • Bunker up-and-down excluded (that's a Sandie/Gary)

Tips

  • Only call it from good lies with a simple chip
  • Decline opponents' calls when they are short-sided
  • Keep values small; calls add up
  • Only call it from a good lie with green to work with
  • Opponents should accept every Murphy called from a fried-egg lie

Puts money on the scrambling shots that decide most matches.
